Skillful Guidance is a project. Its aim is to create a multiprofessional model for collaboration and exchange of skills and to locate adults who are under threat of marginalization from society.
Persons under threat of marginalization are not always easy to recognize through everyday counseling, guidance and services. Reasons for marginalization may be mental problems or alcohol and drug abuse, or unsupported learning difficulties or a criminal history. The problems are often overlapping issues. To recognize them requires comprehensive and multiprofessional skills and knowledge.
Skills can be found in many directions, but finding diverse skills and competence in several fields is a challenging task. Skillful Guidance project combines the skills, competence, expertise and experience of different actors. In other words, we exchange skills and competence. When your own skills are not enough, you can quickly find more through the network.
The project builds a national network of skills and competence and trains persons to guide and instruct. The aim is to give tools for recognizing, guiding and mapping out the clients’ situation comprehensively in everyday life.
The project reaches out primarily to professionals. But what about the persons who are under threat of marginalization? The comprehensive skills and competence of the guiding and instructing personnel benefit everyone. No one likes to be bounced back and forth between different bureaus and offices.
When the problems are quickly recognized, receiving the right kind of support is easier. Support improves the possibilities to get educated, to get employed and to be an active citizen of society. It is essential to recognize and support each individual’s situation in order to guarantee equality and easy access to services.
Involved in the building of the multiprofessional model are: Keskuspuisto Vocational College (administration), Finnish diverse learners’ association, Orton Rehabilitation Centre Ltd. (Vocational Rehabilitation Unit), The Probation Foundation and Finnish Central Association for Mental Health. Anyone working in guiding and instructing of adults with everyday competence and skills are welcome to join the network.
